Gone With The Wind
We headed out late this morning after a long nights sleep. The morning was misty with lots of fog and wind, but at least it wasn’t raining! After another run to the grocery store to load up on lunch supplies, we headed east again on the Ring Road. In Hvollsvollur, we stopped at the Saga Centre where there is an audioguided exhibition of Viking times, and of the Njall Saga in particular.
We continued on the Ring Road south through some beautiful scenery as the clouds began to lift a bit. The wind was so strong the gusts would nearly blow me over when I got out of the car with my camera… not the best for sharp pictures! But I did my best.
We saw this waterfall from the Ring Road tucked back up a canyon.
And this farm just down the way. This is an example of a turf house. The Icelanders used to build their homes and then cover them with sod in order to insulate them for the winters.
More scenery along the road.
Here is Skogafoss. Another waterfall. These things are everywhere!!!
We walked up to one of the arms of the Mydralsjokull (glacier) called Solheimaljokull. This is the entrance to one of the ice caves.
We happened to run into the entire contingent of missionaries in Iceland… out seeing the sights on their p-day They considered the 50 degrees and gusting wind to be downright balmy! (“A nice summer day!”). One was even barefoot with a t-shirt on. Whatever!
On our way to Kirkjubaejarklaustr, we drove across a wide plain filled with this:
Moss growing over lava rocks. Makes for some strange scenery!
It was a great day. The pictures don't do the place justice... Iceland is spectacular so far! If this wind and rain would just stop...
